We at LG Landscape Design
Practice hold our reputation on a fundamental best
practices guide. Not only does it save time and money
for us but our clients are presented a better
finished patio or drive. Our clients can see the
difference between our landscape projects and others.
Our paving projects are all worked out prior to
construction on the drawing board and landscaping plan
and this is key to our success. Any problems that may
arise with the project are discovered at the design
plan, not when the work begins.
We first carry out a detailed survey of the site to
establish any underlying problems with services on-site
and pipes that may be damaged in excavation and
other Health & Safety issues.

The site preparation and the excavation to the correct
levels are the next step in the process. Depending on
the project, the excavation depths are 10 to 15 cm for
patios and 15 to 30 cm for walkways and driveways. But
consideration must be always given to site conditions.
For example, under-ground water tables require
particular attention. Also, with the increase in
rainfall levels, these elements must be taken into
account and dealt accordingly. The sub-soil base should
be rolled and mechanically vibrated.
The base material or foundation material is introduced
at 10 cm levels and is then compacted after each level
until the finished level is achieved. We use 4 cm to
dust level screenings as this gives a more solid final
base. In doing this, there will be no sinkages and the
desired levels are better achieved.
The setting bed of either
sand or concrete is then laid to a thickness of four to
six cm. In general, it is better to start in the
middle of the paved area, as the desired levels can be
achieved better and the correct rain water run-off slope
can be gained.

Finished paving material.
At all times the use of a level should be a prerequisite
and you should always have two falls on the finished
project, especially in the immediate areas around the
base of houses, as surface water here can cause dampness
inside your home.
For block paving finishing, the application of fine sand
is brushed between the joints and the surface is
vibrating compacted. This compacts the sands
between the joints and the surface becomes solid.
In the case of Indian Sandstone, we recommend the use of
Rompox, as this sealer will not stain your finished
product.
